NHS OF NEW HAVEN ANNOUNCES THEME FOR
8th ANNUAL MULTICULTURAL FAMILY FESTIVAL
FULL STEAM AHEAD: CELEBRATING WOMEN & GIRLS IN S.T.E.A.M!

New Haven, CT — Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven (NHS), positioning neighborhoods to succeed for 37 years, announced today the date and theme of their 8th Annual Multicultural Family Festival. The Festival will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2017 and is titled FULL STEAM AHEAD: Celebrating Women & Girls in S.T.E.A.M!  NHS’ family festival, which has become a community staple with residents from all over Connecticut, has featured past themes such as Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, and Environmental Awareness. It is a chance to honor both the diversity and spirit of the New Haven Community and beyond.

From engineers to artists, from scientists to coders, women and girls are learning, excelling, and engaging in S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). The festival invites families and children of all ages to explore hands-on activities, exciting games, and inspirational performers geared toward highlighting professional women in S.T.E.A.M. Admission is free and includes games, food, and activities.

“Our family festivals have afforded us with an opportunity to give back to the community,” said NHS of New Haven executive director Jim Paley. “We are thrilled with this year’s theme and are excited to bring the community together for a day of science experiments, refreshments, and meetings with friends to discuss the importance of highlighting women in the arts and sciences.”

“As Marian Wright Edelman once said, ‘You can’t be what you can’t see,” remarked HomeOwnership Center Managing Director, Bridgette Russell. “It is more important than ever for our young girls to have powerful, strong role models in the S.T.E.A.M. fields, to   learn the many contributions that women have made within these areas, and to ignite their enthusiasm around pursuing careers focused in math and science.”

The Festival will be held on Saturday, May 13 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm at NHS of New Haven's campus on Sherman Avenue. The official event page can be found on NHS' facebook site: facebook.com/nhsofnewhaven.

Celebrating Earth Day 2016!

Happy Earth Day! NHS of New Haven takes great pride in being a NeighborWorks Green Organization. We are proud to have members of our staff on a "green team", we love hosting volunteer groups that help us to clean, preserve, and improve our beautiful planet. And we are dedicated to rehabilitating our all of homes and apartments to Energy Star standards.

That being said, we thought it'd be great to share with you some tips on being "green" this Earth Day and every day thereafter.

These tips were originally posted on Green in Bklyn:

DID YOU KNOW?

1.  Turning down your thermostat by one degree can cut 8% off your fuel bill.

2.  An energy efficient washing machine will use a third less electricity for each wash, which could save you more than the cost of the appliance.

3.  If every household replaced one roll of regular toilet paper with one recycled post-consumer waste roll, 424,000 trees would be saved.

4.  Every three months, Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild the nation ’s commercial air fleet.

5.  The energy saved from one recycled aluminum can will operate a television for three hours.

6.  The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle will light a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.

7.  Recycling a glass bottle also causes 20% less air pollution & 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.

8.  Recycling & reusing the material in “tin” cans reduces energy use by 74%, air pollution by 85%, solid waste by 95% & water pollution by 76%.

9.  It takes 75,000 trees to print a Sunday Edition of the New York Times.

10.   The amount of wood & paper Americans throw away each year is enough to heat 50 million homes for 20 years.

And two more for recycling inspiration…

11.  If Americans recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save 25 million trees a year.

12.  Producing one ton of paper from recycled pulp saves 17 trees, 3 cubic yards of landfill space & 7000 gallons of water. It also reduces air pollutants by 60 pounds, saves 390 gallons of oil & conserves 4200 kilowatt hours of energy – enough to heat a home for half a year.

SAVE THE DATE!

This year, our 7th Annual Family Fun Festival is themed "Paint the Town Green". NHS will promote environmentally-minded initiatives and encourage families to do their part to preserve our beautiful Earth.
Bringing neighbors an opportunity to come together, build community, and have fun, the festival strives to provide a space for people of all ages to enjoy and celebrate all that New Haven has to offer.

Admission is free and includes games, food, and activities. Learn more on our facebook event page here.
