<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This week, Doreen launched free fishing courses at Beaver Pond Park, one of the few public bodies of water designated for fishing in New Haven. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection stocks the pond with trout and catfish throughout the year. On Wednesday (July 18th), Doreen taught the basics of fishing to a group of 42 students. On Saturday (July 21st), she worked with Fixing Fathers, a New Haven organization that works to strengthen father-family bonds, to put on another workshop.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">32 people attended the workshop on the 21st and learned how to tie certain knots, how to cast, and different safety precautions to take. The lessons connect residents to a local greenspace and underutilized community fishing site and allow community members to build a coalition invested in the ecology of local waterways. Fishing is a great outdoor activity for the whole family and we have it right here in Newhallville! if you are interested in scheduling a fishing course with Doreen, call her at 203-415-3646.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">At the Learning Corridor, Doreen and Haley honed their concrete recipe for garden stepping stones. On Friday (July 20th), they guided Newhallville Ambassadors through the process of creating the stones so that the Ambassadors can teach younger students how to make their own. Each student will place their customized stone in the Learning Corridor garden. The stones and beautification activities give the students a sense of ownership that makes recurring visits to the garden more likely.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Doreen and Haley also began working closely with Newhallville resident and gardener extraordinaire Mr. Alonzo (pictured below) in the Learning Corridor garden (also known as the Hazel St. garden). At 90 years old, Mr. Alonzo still tends to the community garden almost every day. He sowed the boun<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ty flourishing in the garden this season: collard greens, callaloo, kale, tomatoes, corn, squash, and herbs.<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> In partnership with the Learning Corridor, Mr. Alonzo will work as the Learning Corridor Garden Keeper. He will continue to manage the garden and oversee plantings. His lifetime of gardening wisdom and knowledge of urban horticulture in New Haven will inform the lessons Doreen and Haley teach to visitors and student groups. Mr. Alonzo already gave Haley tips to ensure the pumpkin patch she planted with students on July 11th will be successful. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">On Monday (July 23rd), rain prevented Haley and Doreen from hosting an Explore.Discover.Create session at the Learning Corridor so kids were taken to the Harris and Tucker school.

On Wednesday (July 11), REI treated volunteers at the mural to free ice cream. NHS provided water and worked with Kwadwo to prepare the mural for the event. A group of children from the Keefe Community Center in Hamden painted at the wall, ate ice cream, and picked up stickers and temporary tattoos from the NHS.

Kwadwo will be at the mural every day from from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Saturdays 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Stop by the mural at 400 Goodrich St on the Farmington Canal trail to help out!
DeLauro presented the results of a staff report linked here prepared at her request. According to the report, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (Trump's tax bill) will significantly increase the tax burden on Connecticut homeowners while handing a windfall to wealthy developers. This bill prevents homeowners from deducting more than $10,000 of their property tax from their income tax. Additionally homeowners will not be able to deduct interest payments on home equity loans from their taxes unless the loan is being used for home improvement. The bill also ends a tax deduction for mortgage insurance premiums from those with incomes below $100,000. The wealthiest will not bare an equal burden. In just the next year, real estate developers will benefit from a $3.7 billion cheaper tax cut. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This new increase on top of New Haven's recent 11% tax hike (which you can read more about <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">here<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">) could easily spell disaster for many of our neighbors. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">DeLauro echoed this sentiment saying that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act undercuts the financial security a home provides, damaging a core component of the American Dream.

Doreen is working at NHS as an Americorps Vista this summer to build green spaces where residents can pursue healthier lifestyles together. The spaces will serve a broader goal of building community cohesion and changing the negative perceptions of poorer New Haven neighborhoods. The Learning Corridor, a hub for education and health and wellness programming on the Farmington Canal Trail, is one such space.

Five years ago, before Doreen started her work, residents of Newhallville called the space where the Learning Corridor sits the “Mud Hole;” an apt name for a plot of land that could not grow grass and served as a hub in the local drug trade.

The health and wellness disparities she witnessed in in Newhallville drove Doreen to turn the “Mud Hole” into the Learning Corridor. Doreen said she watched outsiders study Newhallville relentlessly as a locus for poverty and trauma. But, she said, those studies did not bring additional support or resources.

From the beginning, Doreen capitalized on the cycling infrastructure running through the corridor and the diverse group of people it brought to the heart of Newhallville. The Learning Corridor sits on the Farmington Canal Trail, a train line turned multi-use path, which runs from New Haven, CT to Northampton, MA. Five years ago, the space attracted volunteers on bicycles from outside of Newhallville. Riders on the trail would stop and pick up trash without engaging the surrounding community in the cleanup effort. Doreen wanted to bridge the gap between volunteering efforts and residents. She started beautification events and aggressively fundraised to turn the Learning Corridor into an engine for Newhallville revitalization that is responsive to the community.

While the portion of the Farmington Canal running through Newhallville is larger than any other neighborhood’s, many residents did not have a bike to enjoy it. Doreen made it possible for all residents to ride the trail safely. Purchased and donated bikes from Bradley St. Bike Co-op have a permanent home on the Learning Corridor in a shed. Devil’s Gear Bike Shop donated 25 helmets. In July, Doren plans to start holding regular bike safety lessons. Recently, Newhallville youth have been meeting at the Learning Corridor to use the bikes for their weekly Bike Club. Every Saturday, New Haven bicycling advocate Paul Hammer, leads the bike club down the trail and around Newhallville.

Doreen also uses the Learning Corridor to attract the outside involvement and partnerships that will be critical to Newhallville revitalization. On CT Trails day (June 5), a statewide day of activities to build public support for trails, attendees from around Connecticut visited for free bike rentals and guided tours of Newhallville and the Learning Corridor. New Haven Friends of the Farmington Canal Greenway sponsored the event and Doreen supervised activities. The event gave attendees who are unable to bring their bike to the trail an opportunity to finally cycle down it. Doreen also invites New Haven schools to the Learning Corridor to volunteer and to ride the trail.

The Learning Corridor (on the corner of Shelton Ave and Hazel St) hosts much more than cycling events. Pollinator gardens, bee hives, fitness groups, line dancing and free pancake breakfasts are just a few of the things coming to the Learning Corridor this summer! Here’s what’s coming:

GirlTrek: GirlTrek encourages women of color to lead healthier lives by hosting weekly walking clubs around the nation. Starting in July, one chapter will meet every week on Thursdays at the Learning Corridor from 5:30 to 7
Explore.Discover.Create: Every weekday starting July 9th and lasting until August, partners of the Learning Corridor will host Explore.Discover.Create activities at the Learning Corridor from 10 to 12. Expect hands-on educational activities and lots of fun!
Jazz at the Learning Corridor: Starting July 15th, stop by the Learning Corridor for free jazz performances from 5 to 7.
Eating Healthy Lessons: Stop by on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 in July for lessons on healthy eating with a nutritionist.
Learning Corridor Maintenance: It takes a lot of work to maintain the Learning Corridor, which now encompasses an urban oasis, two small fields, and a community gardening. Visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 to participate in beautification efforts and community gardening.
Biking Club: On Saturdays at 9:00 am, younger residents meet at the Learning Corridor to use a bike free of charge. Bicycle advocate Paul Hammer leads the group.

See our flyer below for more information about each event.
This site is one that has been weeded, mowed, cared for, and tended to by multiple New Haven volunteer groups. It is a site that NHS is proud to continue to work on each and every day. If you're ever interested in learning more about work at Sherman Forest, be sure to contact Stephen Cremin-Endes at NHS.

The day began at 9AM with volunteers from Bike & Build. Founded in 2002, Bike & Build is an organization that benefits affordable housing and empowers young adults for a lifetime of service and civic engagement. During their first 13 years, Bike & Build's eight cross-country trips have engaged 3,000 young adults in service.

The volunteers helped to clear out a large section of Sherman Forest that has been taken over by invasive plant species and weeds. Clearing out the plants allows for a clear trail to become visible while also helping to make the park easy to maintain.

Around 1PM, Sherman Forest was filled with another group of volunteers -- this time from Hamden's Burt Processing. Burt Processing is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of high purity and corrosion equipment, systems, and services.

The employees of Burt Processing, who came to volunteer to us through the United Way of Greater New Haven, were an immense help in clearing out large tree branches, leaves, and debris that covered a large portion of the site (closer to West Division Street). NHS staff were shocked at the speed in which these amazing volunteers cleared out the site and we are grateful for their service and hard work!

It’s not looking good for homeownership these days. According
to the U.S. Census Bureau, 63.7% of households owned their homes at the
end of 2016, down from a peak of 69.2% in 2004. While there have been small increases in recent quarters, the homeownership
trend since the financial crisis continues to veer downward. We need to
reverse this pattern, and these four strategies will help.

First, we have to demystify the process.

More than
two-thirds of adults in an Oct. 2016 national household opinion survey from
NeighborWorks America described the homebuying process as complicated. Our network’s
counselors report that a common refrain from customers they help to achieve
homeownership is, “I never thought I could do this.” Because the purchase process
is so complex, many potential homeowners don’t even try, essentially
self-selecting out of their piece of the “American Dream.”

Increasing the homeownership rate in New Haven, CT will energize the
local economy and create jobs from construction to retail.

Second, we have to return to rational credit standards.

We return
to the loose underwriting of the early 2000s. However, right now, credit
standards are too tight and thus reduce the prospects for homeownership for
many. A recent article
by the Urban Institute noted that innovations in credit scoring practices could
help up to 3 million first-time homebuyers across the country. The lending industry must seriously pursue such modifications.

Third, we need to do a better job in reaching out to low-
and moderate-income consumers.

These are the first-time buyers of the future
and they are unsure about the path to homeownership. Nonprofits housing
organizations have had a “field of dreams” mindset: if we’re here, homebuyers
will find us. That’s not working. The NeighborWorks survey mentioned above also
found that fewer than 10% of consumers think of nonprofit’s like Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven first when considering how to achieve homeownership. Our organization and
others working to increase homeownership, especially among first-time buyers, need
to behave more like businesses and seek out these types of customers. Word of
mouth isn’t enough.

millions of dollars in down-payment assistance funds available in this
community and others. The NeighborWorks survey showed that only one-third of
consumers are aware of down- payment programs for middle-income buyers.

On Saturday, June 3rd, NeighborWorks America officially kicked off their NeighborWorks Week events around the country. This year's theme is NeighborWorks Works!

NeighborWorks Week is a nationwide celebration of the good that comes out of neighbors working and playing together. Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven and the entire NeighborWorks network are committed to bringing about positive change by improving lives and strengthening communities. NHS is helping residents thrive in New Haven, ensuring that the core needs of individuals are met by listening to our neighbors, no matter their income or professional position, and providing or linking residents to essential services.

This year, NHS of New Haven's volunteer event was themed "NeighborWorks Works for Veterans!"

Staff from both NHS and Save the Sound (a local nonprofit that aims to protect and improve the land, air, and water of Connecticut and the Long Island Sound) came together at the home of veteran, Loreen Lawrence, to make minor repairs and additions which included: sanding and staining a wheelchair ramp at the back of her home, landscaping in the front and backyards, as well as installing an eco-friendly rain barrel, storm drain and rain garden.

We simply cannot thank Kendal Barbery (Save the Sound) and her staff enough! Kendal worked the entire week prior to our kickoff with senior students from Hopkins School in order to prepare the rain garden installation. Kendal was also kind enough to teach the Hopkins Students (and NHS staff) the intricacies of designing and building a system that connects the gutters, rain barrel, storm drain and rain garden. The project will help diminish storm water runoff in the West River and the Long Island Sound and help prevent raw sewage from entering the water system unfiltered.

At the rear of the home, NHS staff worked diligently on landscaping, as well as performing simple and small repairs to the wheelchair ramp and backyard deck. Staffers also managed to fit in time to stain the deck with a special traction paint.

The work is far from done, but NHS staff members are so proud to have been able to help a Veteran homeowner enjoy her home just a little bit more, become more environmentally savvy, and have a gorgeous deck to relax on. We look forward to a few more volunteer events at Loreen's home.

A few pictures of the event are below, and more can be found on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/nhsofnewhaven.
Leslie Radcliffe is a life-long resident of New Haven. Her association with NHS began almost two decades ago when she began her journey to become a homeowner. In addition to attending financial literacy workshops, first-time homebuyer seminars, landlord classes, and resident leadership programs at NHS, Leslie has attended two Community Leadership Institute national programs, completed the New Haven Citizens Academy, graduated from the New Haven Democracy School, and is certified member of the Community Emergency Response Team. Active in service to her community, she worked with other residents, Urban Resources Initiative and New Haven Land Trust to establish the Truman Street Community Garden and Greenspace; is a Board member of the City of New Haven City Plan Commission; holds a seat on the New Haven Farms Community Advisory Board; serves as Secretary on the NHS Executive Board; reactivated the Truman Street Block Watch; participates in her District Management Team; holds office and serves faithfully in her church; and is a devoted mom and grandmother.
She advocates for her community by working with residents, municipal and non-profit agencies, and other stakeholders for the betterment of her neighborhood and community. Her outlook on neighborhood improvement is ‘we may not be able to change the world but we can start right where we are ... yard by yard, block by block, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood …’.
